Comcast Customers - Save $10.00/Month!

Internet Service Providers (ISP) seem to have us all in a pinch when it comes to getting the best speeds at the best prices. Just when you think you have done your due diligence and negotiated a fair rate a year goes by and you're back to square one because your introductory or promotional period has expired.

You have a few choices -

1) Call the ISP and negotiate your way back down

2) Shop around with other ISPs and see what is being offered

3) Ditch their monthly equipment rental fee and purchase your own (& then proceed to negotiate your way down anyways)

It is a fairly easy process to replace their rental modem for one of your own as long as you're sure to purchase compatible hardware. With that said, Step 1 would be to visit Comcast's website to see a list of supported modems that you can use. NOTE: If you use Comcast's voice servers you must be sure to purchase a voice/telephone enabled modem (check box on left of their webpage). You can purchase the same one that I am using for under $50.00 from here (will not work with telephone service).

You can choose to purchase a 2-in-1 device like the one you have been renting (Wireless router + Modem) or you can save a bit more on the hardware by purchasing a basic 1 port modem which connects to a wireless router of your choice which would look like this:

Once you get your hardware connected and you see an SSID broadcasted as a wireless access point, you may want to modify some of the default settings within the router per your preferences (or you can call Sky, he can Simplify).

You will want to call Comcast support or go online to Activate your personal hardware in order for it to work with their services. You'll be asked for the typical information as well as the MAC address and serial number that can be found on the bottom of your modem. Once activated, I'd recommend running a speed test from a connected computer to make sure everything is working at the usual upload and download speeds.

That is just about it from a technical standpoint. From here, just be sure you return the rental equipment back to a local Comcast store within 45 days, otherwise they will be sending you a bill! Tip - hang on to the receipt that you'll receive when returning the hardware for at least a couple of months until you confirm the rental code on your bill is permanently removed.

As always, let me know if I can help!
